The Envision Custom Renovations team recently had the thrilling opportunity to collaborate with none other than Drew and Jonathan Scott for an episode of Property Brothers. Calgary parents Allison and Ryan knew they wanted a change, and this renovation turned out to be everything they hoped for and more.
The Project
With two kids under two years and a shortage of space, Allison and Ryan were in need of an upgrade. Finding the right ready-made house within budget proved tricky, so it was time to settle on a 1,200 sqft fixer-upper for a full-scale renovation. The couple knew they wanted high ceilings, an open plan, a practical mudroom, a contemporary kitchen, and plenty of storage space. Prior to renovation, their new property was a bit cramped, stylistically dated, and lacking in natural light. The kitchen also overlooked the driveway, not ideal for a mom who wants to keep an eye on her kids in the backyard. Drew, Jonathan, and the Envision team had their work cut out for them.
Transformative Changes
As construction began on this ambitious reno, Envision co-founder Alan Hrehirchuk was more than up to the task of giving Allison and Ryan the home of their dreams. After eliminating the unneeded walls, our team vaulted the ceilings in the kitchen to provide a major boost in spaciousness and wow factor. Not only this, but we constructed a sizeable new garage in their backyard and repurposed the old one as an addition. This allowed for maximum functionality with a mudroom and upgraded space for storage. The kitchen was moved to the back of the house to overlook the yard (which, by the way, we outfitted with a beautiful deck), and the front door was relocated to connect with the mudroom and allow extra light in with a new window.
A New Look for a New Home
An upgraded layout should always be matched with an upgraded look. The exterior walls, formerly dressed with unsightly teal cladding, were painted a timeless earth-tone grey, while going with light interior walls and hardwood flooring helped to amplify incoming natural light. As per the couple’s request, we created a modernized kitchen with an island, unique marble mosaic backsplash, and farmhouse style pendant lighting in the dining area. Foliage and natural materials also lend the space a lovely organic feel. On the whole, Ryan and Allison’s new home more than meets their functional needs while exuding both character and contemporary flare.
As the brothers pointed out in their own article on the project, this renovation showed us once again that “customizing a home, no matter the scope of the job, is better than purchasing an expensive turnkey property.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves!
